CSSA has joined with a number of prominent Australians to sign a letter in support of a $50 increase to the Newstart allowance in the May Budget.

"Even with all the other pressures mounting on the Federal Government in terms of expenditure in the upcoming Budget it is critical for people currently living on $35 a day that Newstart is increased,” said Mr Paul O’Callaghan, Executive Director of CSSA.

“The evidence-base for an increase has been strong on this issue but our political leaders have continued to treat it as a second order issue for far too long.  The time has come for this to change,” he said.

“We are proud to stand with all the other people and organisations who are signatories to this letter in calling for a $50 increase to Newstart,” he said.
