CSSA in the media - Marcelle Mogg speaks with John Cleary ABC Radio - Sunday Nights program
The morning after newly minted Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull presented us with his optimistic vision of a renewed Australia, a country where it was the best time to be alive, just down the road, a small reality check was taking place.
Anglicare Australia at its annual conference released research produced by the National Centre for Social and Economic Modellingpointing to growing inequality across the country, and a fall in living standards for those on the lowest incomes.
Just a week or so earlier the National Reform Summit, with timing that now seems like foreknowledge, brought together representatives of business, civil society groups and unions.
The statement from the Summit, recognised that while there were opportunities, there was a pressing agenda for reform that left addressed would see Australia quickly lose hold of the 'vision splendid'.
Back in July the Dropping off the Edge 2015 report, produced by Jesuit Social Services and Catholic Social Services Australia, revealed entrenched disadvantage across a number of Australian communities. That report authored by Professor Tony Vinson and Associate Professor Margot Rawsthorne from the University of Sydney found a small number of communities have disproportionately high levels of unemployment, low family income and education, housing stress, domestic violence and prison admissions, severely limiting life opportunities and placing significant social and economic costs on the broader community.
So with a new Prime Minister this week, and a new Cabinet today, tonight we are discussing 'Resetting the Australian Agenda'. LISTEN TO THE PROGRAM HERE
