Catholic Social Services Australia (CSSA) applauds the landmark appointment of the Hon Sussan Ley MP as the first woman to lead the Liberal Party in its 81-year history.

Dr Jerry Nockles, Executive Director of CSSA, welcomed Ms Ley’s appointment, noting the significance of this milestone in Australian political leadership.

“Ms Ley’s election represents not merely a personal achievement but an important step forward for Australia’s democratic institutions,” said Dr Nockles.

“As an organisation committed to promoting human dignity and the common good, we recognise the value of diverse leadership that reflects the breadth of Australian society.”

“Throughout her 25-year parliamentary career, Ms Ley has demonstrated a remarkable versatility and depth of experience. Her background as a mother, commercial pilot, shearers’ cook, public servant, and her service across multiple ministerial portfolios including Health, Environment, and Aged Care brings a wealth of real-world perspective to her leadership role.”

Dr Nockles emphasised CSSA’s readiness to collaborate with Ms Ley and her shadow ministry.

“We look forward to working constructively with Ms Ley on policies that advance the common good, particularly for the most vulnerable in our society. Leadership that recognises the inherent dignity of every person and works to elevate human potential across all communities is essential for a flourishing Australia.”
